Snack to Supper Guide

Already have a snack program?
You can now offer supper at a $2.9225 reimbursement!

Upgrading your snack program to a full meal (supper) is easier than you think.

Why is supper important?

  • In most states, children in afterschool enrichment programs have been offered a snack, at most
  • With many children staying after school from 2:30 pm to 6:00 pm or even later, and who may have last had lunch before noon, a snack is simply not enough food
  • Now, qualified sponsors can offer an adequate meal, and make program participation much more attractive to students

What is the background?

  • Child Nutrition Reauthorization extended the supper program to all 50 states (formerly known as the Lugar pilot, and available in only 13 states plus DC)
  • Funding is $2.72 per meal plus an additional $0.2025 in commodities or cash in lieu; versus $0.74 for snack
  • The funding rate for supper is four times greater than for snack
  • The effective date for the new funding was October 1, 2010
  • ALL children who participate in a qualified after school program in a low-income area qualify for a meal at full reimbursement
  • Meals may be served at any point during the after school program (and if enough time elapses, a snack may also be served)
  • Meals served can be hot or cold, they may be prepared onsite of off, and an open kitchen is not a requirement
