Celebrate National School Breakfast Week March 8-12
March 4, 2021

To encourage more families to take advantage of the healthy choices available with school breakfast, school districts across the country will celebrate National School Breakfast Week (NSBW) during March 8-12, 2021. This year’s theme is “Score Big With School Breakfast.”

Resources from the School Nutrition Association include Marketing and PR Resources and a  comprehensive tool kit that can be found on the SNA website which provide materials for use with students, parents, administrators, and the media. As noted in the tool kit, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, schools have greater flexibility to serve all meals—breakfast and lunch—free to all students, regardless of income and whether they are learning in-school or at a remote location. These meals are being provided by either the federal summer meals program or the SBP.

Busy weekday mornings make it a challenge for many families to find time for a healthy breakfast. However, USDA data show that more and more students are starting their day with a nutritious breakfast at school. The USDA School Breakfast Program currently serves nearly 15  million students every day. However, 30 million students get school lunch every day, so there’s plenty of students missing out of this opportunity. Studies show that students who eat school breakfast are more likely to:

  • Reach higher levels of achievement in reading and math
  • Score higher on standardized tests
  • Have better concentration and memory
  • Be more alert
  • Maintain a healthy weight
